Talking Trees
Greenhouse Evolution. Episode 2. Sketchup Design Process. Design-Build-Evolve. Earthship Inspired
In this 3 part video series I am going to share my design process and go over the evolutions of our Greenhouse.
With only 3 weeks left in the construction of our first Earthship Inspired, Holistic Homes Greenhouse, winter has offered us some time to reflect on the build and evolve its design.
Using Sketchup, I am going to redesign the Holistic Homes Greenhouse from the ground up. I will go over the process, evolutions, and reasons for each evolution, and the greenhouse overall.
In episode 2 of 3, in our HHG Evolution series, we start with a 360 view of our Evolving HHG, while going over “why design anything when there’s already so many designs out there?” I would like to apologize for the missing footage of the designing of the bottle wall. A computer error wiped the recording, but we seem to have everything sorted now. With the roof hidden, we can see the interior of the Greenhouse. I start with minor adjustments and fine tuning before designing the window trim and finishing the cladding on the interior and exterior of the Greenhouse. Before we can design the berm, we need to place theses 2, 20’ x 10” cooling tubes. With the interior end of the cooling tubes placed in the 3rd row of tires, we can now angle the cooling tubes down on the exterior side for drainage. We can now design the berm, which I will say, may be the only process that’s easier in real life. ;) We are going to protect the building from the elements by designing all the flashings, soffits, and facia, which are all metal. The short roof that connects to the front roof has the venting for the Greenhouse located inside it, above the soffit. Having the vents located here protects them from the elements, which helps to insure a long life for the most mechanical piece of the building. Their location is also at the highest and hottest point in the building which will maximize the natural convection used by the Greenhouses cooling system. With the cooling tubes set, we spend some time finalizing the berm and where it meets the back of the building before designing the ease trough, downspouts, and exterior water management elements. We finish up this episode by placing the 6 solar panels, which will provide power for the entire building before adjusting all the textures, colours, and materials in the model.
It’s really starting to take shape now. :)
This build and these buildings are about more than just the structure we’re creating, as they affect the structure of your whole life. Generations should not be separated into different buildings all day every day, they should be together, and these buildings offer that life style.
We hope you enjoy. :)
Talking Trees is Community Reimagined.
We hear people like Eckhart Tolle, Kyle Cease, Michael Reynolds, Subtle Infinity, and even JP Sears speak about moving towards smaller communities. They use terms like off-grid, sustainable, and eco, to describe these new spaces.
We call them Holistic Communities.
After 2020 there seems to be a huge push in the direction of sustainability and sovereignty on every level, from completely sustainable off-grid homes to food and land security.
We are awakening and evolving out loud and I AM so grateful that the Talking Trees Tribe has been creating a blueprint for such a community, a Holistic Community, Community Reimagined.
This Holistic Greenhouse build is just a glimpse into what we will be creating in Talking Trees Community, because when you reimagine community, you look at every aspect of it from a holistic perspective. You peer through the mire, beyond the matrix, and into the natural world.
The Vision
Nestled among majestic trees, beautiful lakes and streams a community is forming where people are following their passions, inner talents, and co-operating instead of competing. Where everyone works together, pursuing their labor of love for the benefit of the entire community.
Holistic Homes integrate with their surroundings, allowing the natural landscape to determine the layout of the community, while preserving its natural beauty.
